H1N1 Flu Especially Hard On Children With Sickle Cell Disease

Children with sickle cell disease are especially hard-hit by the H1N1 flu strain, causing more life-threatening complications than the seasonal flu, according to a study from Johns Hopkins Children's Center. The study's findings, published online July 23 in an early edition of the journal Blood, should be heeded as a warning call by parents and pediatricians that children with sickle cell anemia are more likely to need emergency treatment and to be hospitalized if they contract the H1N1 flu... Norway Is Probably Well Prepared For Major New Outbreaks Of Swine Flu

By autumn 2009, almost half of the population of Norway had been vaccinated against the pandemic influenza A (H1N1) virus. Many had also been infected by the virus during the summer and autumn outbreaks. The majority of those who were vaccinated or were infected are expected to have developed immunity to the virus. A study of the Norwegian population's immune status to the pandemic virus in January 2010 was recently published in the journal Eurosurveillance... (Source: Health News from Medical News Today)

Hospital Discharge Data for Guillain-Barre Syndrome and Influenza A (H1N1) Vaccine Adverse Events.

Authors: Jones TF, McMillian M, Boothe E, Hanna S, Ingram LA
To the Editor: As part of the public health response to the current pandemic (H1N1) 2009, surveillance for adverse events following vaccination for influenza A (H1N1) is a high priority (1). Surveillance for Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) has been of particular interest, because the syndrome was associated with the 1976-1977 swine influenza vaccine (1,2). To study this association, reliable ascertainment of recent incident cases of GBS is necessary.

H1N1 (swine Flu) Activity Remains Locally Intense In Part Of India And New Zealand

The World Health Organization (WHO) informs that H1N1 virus transmission continues to be intense in parts of New Zealand and India. During the first week of August, the national consultation rate in New Zealand for influenza-like illness (ILI) increased sharply, especially in parts of the country that were less affected by last winter's pandemic wave. Even so, overall national ILI rates and total numbers of severe and fatal cases of H1N1 are below 2009 pandemic levels, authorities report... (Source: Health News from Medical News Today)

This Flu Season’s Goal Is More Shots, Sooner

Federal health officials are gearing up to persuade more Americans to get vaccinated against the flu this fall, in the aftermath of last year's pandemic that killed thousands nationwide, sickened millions, and frustrated many before petering out. U.S. officials say they're using lessons learned from the H1N1 swine-flu pandemic, which erupted in April 2009, to speed the production and development of vaccine and to try to reach more people with shots. The vaccination of children and adolescents in Finland with swine flu vaccine - Pandemrix - has been suspended until a link to narcolepsy has either been ruled out or detected, the Finnish National Institute for Health and Wefare (THL - Terveyden ja Hyvinvoinin Laitos) announced today.
